U3A Talk- Chipping Campden Silk Mill and Coventry Ribbons

 Events

An illustrated talk by Dick Cluley.

For a brief period 1770 to 1860, the North Cotswold towns of Chipping Campden, Winchcombe and Blockley experienced industrialization in the form of watermills which boosted the local economy, employing several woman and children who prepared raw silk for the thriving Coventry silk ribbon industry. Coventry was the main producer of silk ribbons during that period and did not have sufficient waterpower to drive the machinery for the throwing process. The mills relied on water power as this was before the days of steam. Dick will describe the building and the processes that were carried out during the period and some of the people involved. I will also give some background to the industry and describe the production of silk ribbons carried out in Coventry.
