Great for: Animals Family Outdoors
Ditch the ordinary and embark on a magical day trip around Shipston, where farmyard friends, fascinating falcons, and even curious camels await!
There’s plenty of animals to enjoy around Shipston, and we’re not just talking about the sheep that still dot the rolling countryside around the town! For a day filled with animal magic, we’ve pulled together a day trip covering traditional farming, birds of prey and even camels!
Before you set off, enjoy a light breakfast at The Blue Bean Coffee Shop before heading out just 4 miles up the road to Joseph’s Amazing Camels. Create unforgettable memories as you meet these gentle giants, get the chance to groom them and even trek with them!
After an hour of caring for camels, it’s time for lunch, so why not head to Whatcote to experience the Michelin Star Royal Oak. Savour exquisite flavours of wild meats, foraged finds, and seasonal delights. For a more casual lunch, stop at The Lion at Treddington for a hearty, freshly made lunch with a tasty real ale – enjoy it in their cosy rooms in cold weather or in the sunshine in the large garden in warmer months.
After lunch, travel further south to Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park where visitors of all ages can interact closely with the animals and learn about farming, past and present. Meet a menagerie of over 50 farmyard favourites, including Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs and Highland cattle at this popular family attraction.
Alternatively, if birds of prey are more up your street, Cotswold Falconry centre should definitely be on your list of places to visit. Learn about their fascinating behaviours, impressive skills, and about the unique needs of eagles, owls, vultures, hawks, falcons and kites to name just some of the species that make the Falconry centre their home. Witness the incredible flying skills of these feathered predators during daily displays. Explore the breeding aviaries or even book an exclusive encounter with owls or other birds of prey. Check the times of flying displays, typically taking place three times a day to ensure you catch one while you’re there.
Once you’ve enjoyed the spectacular flights and visited the aviaries, unwind in the 60 acres of wild gardens, in one of the largest private tree collections in the country at Batsford Arboretum – right next door to the Falconry centre. Boasting over 2,800 trees from across the globe, offers a captivating escape into a world of diverse flora and enchanting landscapes. Spot native birds amongst the canopy of trees and marvel at the delicate blooms providing seasonal colours throughout the year.
Conclude your exhilarating day with a scenic walk or hike through the breathtaking Cotswold countryside. Take in the panoramic views of rolling hills and charming villages, making this the perfect finale to your animal-filled adventure.
